Webinar:
The state of physical and digital crime in Brazil

Date: Tuesday, 10 November 2020
Time:
11h (BRT)
Event organised in partnership with the Dutch Consulate in Rio and Igarapé Institute

Brazil registers among the highest rates of violent crime in the world. It also experiences widespread cyber-crime, from phishing to malware. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated some types of criminality and diminished others. It has also provoked structural changes in organized crime, including the diversification of illicit markets and a surge in digital malfeasance.

The Igarapé Institute will speak about short and medium-term trends in crime both online and off. The award-winning think tank will also highlight what the government is doing about it, and how private sector actors can improve their resilience. The discussion will review crime trends at national, state and municipal level with focus on RJ and SP; cyber-crime dynamics following on from Janes review; government responses and strategies since 2018 and in 2020; and explore what the private sector is and can do.
